NewSpace 2016 Technology and Innovation

Our team attended it, and left the conference very excited about the innovation and technology surrounding space exploration, and the related business opportunities.

Satellite Technology is one area of research and expansion, including personal satellites. You may have heard of a unique class of satellites called CubeSats.

CubeSats are designed for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) – the region of space from around 200 to 800 miles above the Earth, where human-tended missions like the Hubble Space Telescope and the International Space Station (ISS) hang out. They can also attain more distant orbits; NASA plans for most of its future Earth-escaping payloads (to the moon and Mars especially) to carry CubeSats.

The greater Seattle area is rapidly becoming a hub to the new space industry. Companies in the area include Spaceflight Industries, Blue Origin, Vulcan Aerospace, Planetary Resources, and Aerojet Rocketdyne. We expect many more to join the list over the next 18-24 months.

Companies in various stages of growth, ranging from startup through Series A, B, and C financed companies to self-sustaining enterprises have become attractive to investors.

As the NewSpace industry evolves, we expect technology and the skills needed to implement new ideas to  constantly evolve, too. Right now the space industry is booming with job opportunities. Young engineers as well as seasoned professionals  in demand. Beyond engineering, there are opportunities in computer science, business development, investment, finance and more.
