Using Virtual Job Fairs to Recruit In-Demand Talent

The Challenge

How can smaller businesses compete against larger corporations to discover, attract, and employ the most innovative talent in the world?

About 560,000 foreign students can temporarily work in STEM-related fields during, and after their studies.

Many startups and tech companies are finding difficulty recruiting young talent in general, and are finding it especially challenging to attract graduating students from top universities.

Locating and attracting STEM talent from universities is difficult. Growing businesses often do not have the luxury of time, nor head-count, to physically attend an on-campus job fair. In fact, many companies do not have an HR or marketing department. Busy students may, or may not, be able to attend the job fairs.

Universities do not have comprehensive knowledge of all employment opportunities, nor the coaching time, to help graduating classes discover, assess, and find employment that is best suited to individual interests and skill sets.

Costs can also be a deterrent factor for students and companies. Participating in on-campus job fairs, and traveling to them are often expensive, especially so for startups with limited recruiting budgets. Placing employment ads online can be costly, yet ultimately ineffective in sourcing people with skills that match requirements. Online job boards such as craigslist are impersonal, and do not provide connections that are essential for job seekers and employers.

The Solution

We’ve found an efficient solution for locating and acquiring new talent. Virtual career fairs connect growing companies to graduating foreign student talent with Master’s and Ph.D STEM degrees.

International Employment Experts, in partnership with major Universities, provides an event that gives companies and students an interactive approach. This allows employers to preview resumes, and schedule interviews. Graduates may research jobs, view information, and schedule interviews with companies that interest them. Everyone has the ability chat online interactively from the comfort of their home or office.

The event is cost-effective in terms of convenience, as there is no travel, nor physical presence and booth set-up required. Hiring outreach is greatly improved, since the event is not bound to a physical building. Participants from around the world may attend at the same time! This is particularly important for reaching a foreign graduate.

During, and post-event, employers conduct their normal selection process to determine who to hire. International Employment Experts then takes care of all the details, by becoming the employer of record for foreign talent, finalizing the offer agreement and taking care of all required employment matters. This includes completing all the paperwork, and starting the process for all required immigration services on a company’s behalf. International Employment Experts will provide OPT extensions, H-1B visas and green cards.

Results

The results were very successful.

Graduating Job candidates were, and continue to be, eager to participate, University events are on-going, and now conducted twice yearly. The companies participating were pleased to have convenient access to a pool of highly qualified candidates, and are planning to participate again. Reasons cited were:

  • Eliminating the need and expenses of travel.
  • Rapid hiring process
  • Introduction to skilled workforce that used to be undiscoverable
  • The ability to ‘try out’ engineering grads on a temporary basis
  • STEM graduates are able to build their resume
  • Foreign talent does not need to immediately exit the U.S.
  • Graduates who received employment offers through International Employment Experts were able to remain in the U.S. for 36 months, and received assistance throughout the immigration process.

Universities are now very excited to be able to present employment avenues to their graduates, gaining greater exposure to companies in STEM fields across the United States. They are now introducing recent alumni as additional participants.
