Jobs for biomedical engineers are hot! Government projections put job growth at 23 percent – more than three times the average for all jobs – during the decade ending in 2024.

According to the U. S. Department of Commerce, STEM occupations are growing at 17%, while other occupations are growing at 9.8%. STEM careers are very diverse, and include jobs like financial analyst, biochemist, mechanical engineer, mathematician, IT manager, accountant and software developer. In terms of the raw number of STEM jobs, STEM jobs increased much faster than overall employment: 28 percent since 2000 compared to 6 percent for all jobs.

Did you know that in 2014, immigrant entrepreneurs founded 29 percent of all new U.S. startups? That is almost twice as much as that of U.S.-born adults.

In fact, a recent study published by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation argues persuasively that the U.S. stands to lose valuable economic contributors unless it removes immigration barriers to international STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) students who earn advanced degrees here.

Many talented scientists and engineers in the US are currently enrolled in top STEM PhD programs throughout the country. However, 74% of college graduates with STEM degrees are going into non-STEM jobs, according to the Census Bureau. They’re pursuing careers in everything from healthcare and law to education and social work.

The competitive edge of the U.S. economy requires enabling an environment for innovation according to a new study by the World Economic Forum, a non-partisan research group. The report found that the U.S. ranked third among 138 countries and regions. Breakthroughs in technologies such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, the Internet of Things, and 3D printing, and other innovations, will provide new avenues for growth and development in the future.
